Ureteroscopy for urinary stones

Ureteroscopy uses a thin viewing instrument passed through the natural urinary passage to reach a stone in the ureter or kidney. The stone may be removed or broken into smaller pieces.

Why it may be used

Ureteroscopy may be discussed when a stone is unlikely to pass, symptoms continue, urine flow is obstructed, another treatment is unsuitable, or direct treatment is preferred. Suitability depends on stone size and location, infection, anatomy, pregnancy status, kidney function, other health conditions, and local expertise.

Alternatives

Alternatives may include observation with follow-up, medicines in selected cases, shock-wave treatment, or another stone procedure. The balance of benefits and risks is individual.

Preparing for the procedure

The care team may arrange urine testing, blood tests, imaging, medication review, fasting instructions, and anesthesia assessment. Tell the team about infection symptoms, allergies, pregnancy possibility, implanted devices, and medicines that affect bleeding. Do not stop medicine unless the responsible clinician tells you to.

What happens

The instrument is guided through the urinary passage. The surgeon identifies the stone and may remove it with a small basket or break it using an energy source. A stent may be left temporarily to support drainage. Exact steps vary.

Recovery and follow-up

Temporary urinary discomfort, urgency, or a small amount of blood may occur, especially with a stent. The team should give written instructions explaining expected symptoms, pain control, activity, stent removal, follow-up imaging, and when to seek help.

Risks and possible side effects

Risks may include infection, bleeding, injury or narrowing of the ureter, residual fragments, need for a stent, or need for another procedure. Risk varies by the stone and the patient’s circumstances; the treating team should provide procedure-specific estimates.
